What is Advent?
Advent simply means coming or arrival. Traditionally, the celebrating of the Advent season is the period beginning four Sundays before Christmas, to celebrate the coming of Christ into the world.
Simply put, is the expecting, waiting, and preparing for the celebration of the birth of Christ and the return of Christ.
Throughout this Advent series, we will be focusing on a different word and theme of Advent. Each week we will unpack the world’s understanding of each word in contrast to the Bible’s portrayal and definition. This week’s focus is on the word Hope. In general, hope means a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen.
This true in regards to our expectation for the Messiah; both in Israel’s hope of Christ’s birth and our hope of Jesus’ return. The difference here is that it isn’t wishful thinking. We don’t live through life with our fingers crossed that heaven is real and God’s promises are sure. The strength we get to navigate this life comes from knowing who our God is and what He did for us… that’s our hope.
It is why Paul told the church of Colossae that “Christ in you is the hope of glory”. Because of what Christ did for us, we now have a confidence (or a hope) of the future.
So today as we light the first candle and sing songs of hope to our God, we do so expectantly; but not in a wishful thinking sort of way, but rather with a voice of confidence in who our God is and the hope that he gave to the world.
May this season of advent and the practice of lighting of the advent candle be an opportunity for each of us to reflect on the hope that we have in Christ Jesus.
